The job of a Medical Biller and Coder is to acquire information from patients, like personal history – involving (but not limited to) detailed and specific procedure history, examination results, family health history, and previous findings and diagnoses across many years. Once all the information is collected, their job really begins. This information is translated into a numerical code or language, not unlike that of a courtroom stenographer. When all of this coding is finished, it is passed on to the insurance company for them to look over. Depending on the accuracy of the Medical Biller and Coder, the patient could receive accurate or unreliable insurance help.
Medical Billing and Coding employees work in a number of wide ranging locations, including home healthcare sites, assisted living homes, hospitals, and nursing homes. The government can also employ Medical Biller and Coders through federal or state-owned insurance companies. Unlike Phlebotomists and State-Tested Nursing Assistants, Medical Billing and Coders have very little to no physical contact with patients or clients.
